Morocco Strengthens Its Position in the Global Innovation Index 2026

Global Innovation Index 2026 Morocco and intellectual property – H&H IP LAW

Morocco continues to strengthen its position on the global innovation landscape. In the Global Innovation Index 2026 (GII 2026), published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Morocco ranks 54th among 139 economies, achieving its best ranking ever in the Index. WIPO

This performance confirms a long-term upward trajectory. WIPO identifies Morocco among the middle-income economies that have made some of the strongest advances in innovation since 2013, alongside economies such as China, India, Viet Nam, Türkiye, the Philippines and Indonesia. WIPO

Beyond the overall ranking, the Global Innovation Index 2026 Morocco results reveal another important development: intellectual property and intangible assets are becoming increasingly significant components of the country’s innovation ecosystem.

Intellectual Property Among Morocco’s Innovation Strengths

Morocco’s performance is particularly noteworthy in indicators related to industrial designs, trademarks and intangible assets.

According to WIPO’s 2026 data, Morocco ranks:

  • 5th worldwide for industrial designs by origin relative to GDP;
  • 8th worldwide for intangible asset intensity;
  • 16th worldwide for trademarks by origin relative to GDP;
  • 28th worldwide in high-tech manufacturing. WIPO

These rankings are significant because innovation is not limited to technological inventions or research and development.

A company can innovate through the appearance of a product, the development of a distinctive brand, a new business model, digital services or the creation of other commercially valuable intangible assets.

The strong performance of industrial designs in Morocco, in particular, demonstrates the importance of design as an economic and competitive asset.

Similarly, Morocco’s position in trademark applications relative to GDP reflects the growing importance businesses place on branding, market differentiation and commercial identity.

Morocco Is Converting Innovation Resources into Results

Another particularly interesting element of the GII 2026 is the relationship between innovation inputs and outputs.

Morocco ranks 76th for innovation inputs, but significantly higher — 46th — for innovation outputs. WIPO highlights this difference as evidence that Morocco is generating comparatively strong innovation results from its available resources. WIPO

This ability to convert resources into tangible results is important for the country’s innovation ecosystem.

According to WIPO, Morocco’s progress reflects a growing combination of industrial upgrading and business use of intangible assets. Design, branding, intellectual property and product differentiation are increasingly complementing the country’s productive capabilities. WIPO

This evolution also reinforces the strategic importance of intellectual property protection in Morocco.

Innovation Creates Value — Intellectual Property Helps Protect It

Innovation alone does not automatically create sustainable competitive advantage.

A new product can be copied. A distinctive design can be imitated. A successful commercial name can be reproduced or registered by a third party. Technology developed through significant investment can lose much of its economic value if the underlying rights have not been properly identified and protected.
This is where intellectual property becomes a strategic business tool.

Depending on the nature of the innovation, companies can rely on different mechanisms:

Trademarks protect names, logos and other distinctive signs that identify the commercial origin of products and services.

Industrial designs protect the visual appearance of eligible products and can be particularly important in sectors where design influences purchasing decisions.

Patents may protect eligible technical inventions that meet the applicable legal requirements.

Copyright can protect eligible original works, including certain creative, digital and artistic productions.

Contracts and confidentiality mechanisms can also play an essential role in protecting know-how, commercial information and business relationships.
The appropriate strategy therefore depends on the nature of each intangible asset.

From Filing Rights to Managing an IP Portfolio

The results of the Global Innovation Index 2026 Morocco also invite companies to think beyond the simple registration of intellectual property rights.
For businesses, an effective IP strategy should begin with identifying their intangible assets.
Which names and brands generate commercial value? Which product designs are distinctive? Which innovations may qualify for patent protection? Which creations are protected by copyright? Which know-how should remain confidential?

The next step is to determine where protection is required.
For a Moroccan company planning international expansion, protecting a trademark only in Morocco may not be sufficient. Conversely, filing rights across multiple jurisdictions without a clear commercial strategy can generate unnecessary costs.

An intellectual property portfolio should therefore evolve alongside the company’s markets, products and business objectives.

Industrial Designs: A Particularly Strong Moroccan Indicator

Morocco’s 5th-place global ranking for industrial designs by origin relative to GDP deserves particular attention. WIPO

Design is sometimes underestimated in intellectual property strategies, even though it can represent a significant part of a product’s commercial appeal.

This applies to many industries, including packaging, furniture, consumer goods, fashion, automotive components, decorative products, digital interfaces and industrial products.

Protecting an innovative design can therefore help a business preserve product differentiation and limit unauthorized copying.

For Moroccan companies seeking to compete internationally, combining design protection and trademark protection can be particularly effective: the design protects the appearance of the product, while the trademark protects the commercial identity under which it is marketed.

Trademarks and the Growing Value of Branding

Morocco’s 16th-place ranking for trademarks by origin relative to GDP is another important indicator. WIPO

A trademark is more than a registration certificate. Over time, it can become one of a company’s most valuable intangible assets.
It concentrates reputation, customer recognition, trust and market positioning.
For this reason, trademark strategy should include not only registration but also availability searches, monitoring, opposition proceedings, renewals and enforcement against unauthorized use.

As Moroccan businesses expand into international markets, managing trademarks strategically becomes increasingly important.

Morocco’s Long-Term Innovation Trajectory

The GII 2026 also places Morocco’s current performance in a broader perspective.

WIPO identifies Morocco as one of the middle-income economies that have made the strongest long-term advances since 2013. Morocco has also recorded innovation performance above expectations relative to its level of economic development on multiple occasions. WIPO

At the same time, the report identifies areas where further progress is possible, particularly in research capacity, university performance, scientific production, business R&D, patenting and stronger links between science and industry. WIPO

The 2026 results therefore reflect both significant progress and opportunities for further development.
For Moroccan companies, one message is particularly clear: as the country’s innovation ecosystem develops, intangible assets will increasingly influence competitiveness and business value.
